Absence of Love, The: The Absence of Love is the opposite of The Great Gardener. He controls The Shadowy Specters and feeds on the anger and mayhem it causes in the hearts of people. Country Chapel, A: Chickens and songbirds refer to “A Country Chapel” as the places originally built by people to assemble and worship God. They usually brought their chickens and sometimes other farm animals which could get noisy at times.

People soon learned that they could welcome in songbirds from the world outside as long as they were given special candelabras where they could perch just as they did on trees outside the Country Chapel.

There were two types of Chapel Candelabras found within a Country Chapel: a Story Book Candelabra and a Song Book Candelabra.

Healing Tree, A: Chickens use “A Healing Tree” when they are speaking about any tree where songbirds regularly gather and sing. It is believed that their songs supply nourishment through the leaves, just as the soil supplies nourishment through the roots. Any tree can be A Healing Tree, but these trees are different from all other types of trees because they are classified as other non-tree living things as “Living Treasures.”

Living Library, The: When chickens and songbirds refer to “The Living Library,” they mean a world-wide group of songbirds who have the combined task of preserving all knowledge. They save everything known because they do not know which piece of knowledge will be needed in order to save the world from destruction.

Professor Accipiter: This is the main Evil Character which all of the chickens in The Backyard Garden must come in contact with. He thinks quite highly of himself when he is merely an instrument doing the bidding for The Absence of Love. He receives his abilities directly from The Absence of Love and can control a host of Shadowy Specters to accomplish his goal. He owns and operates The Blue Moon Circus and Sideshow Extravaganza. The majority of the performers are captive birds. He is assisted by The Sewer Rat who works to recruit new talent for the circus.

He actively seeks out new talent to trick into joining the Blue Moon Circus, particularly any birds with extraordinary appearance or abilities. The Sewer Rat’s favorite lunch spot is The City Dump. He can also be found along the city’s Seawall and Piers. (The Laughing Gull visits these places also and keeps up to date on his activities to share with other members of The Living Library.)

The Sewer Rat: When young Professor Accipiter ran away from home, he fled to The City Dump. There among the trash, he was found by The Sewer Rat who he treated like a Teddy Bear to cuddled up and sleep with.

Shadowy Specters: Chickens and Songbirds rarely speak about “Shadowy Specters” because to speak about them is to over them a welcome to come and visit. They are very undesirable and act upon the desires of The Absence of Love. People would call these “Demons.”
